The Kwan Um Zen School Germany was founded in Berlin in 1990 and today comprises centers and groups in Berlin, Dresden, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg and Cologne. It represents Zen Buddhism in the Korean tradition, as taught by Zen master Seung Sahn and his master students. Our Zen practice together is intended to bring clarity and compassion to everyday life. The Kwan Um Zen School Germany is a registered non-profit organization.

We practice sitting and walking meditation, sutra recitation, prostrations, formal meals and working together. Our Zen practice also includes lectures, talks and teachings with teachers from our school as well as Kong-An interviews.
In this way, we gradually achieve clarity and a compassionate mind that can help all beings from moment to moment.
The Zen practice follows the direct, simple style of Zen master Seung Sahn, who founded our school.

Coming empty-handed, going empty-handed
– that is human life.
When you were born, where did you come from?
When you die, where do you go?
Life is like a passing cloud that appears.
Death is like a passing cloud that disappears.
Originally, the passing cloud does not exist.
It is the same with life and death, coming and going.
But, there is something that always remains clear.
Pure and clear and independent of life and death.
What is this pure and clear something?
